One to One Support
At The Dreadnought Centre, we know that every young person is unique, with their own hopes and dreams. That’s why we offer one-to-one support sessions that are tailored just for them. Our goal is to help young people not only tackle the challenges they face but also grow in confidence and resilience, so they can succeed in all areas of their lives.
Child-Led Sessions
At Dreadnought, our sessions are guided by the young person, empowering them to take an active role in shaping their own journey. This approach ensures they feel truly heard, valued, and in control. By centring the experience around their needs and interests, we foster self-awareness, build resilience, and encourage healthy coping strategies that last a lifetime.
Expert Support
We are dedicated to delivering compassionate, evidence-based support within a safe and confidential environment. Whether navigating anxiety, managing anger, low self-esteem, or significant life changes, our experienced counsellors provide thoughtful guidance grounded in respect and empathy. At every step, we prioritise the young person’s wellbeing, creating space for honest conversation and real progress.
We empower children and young people to thrive in a complex world.
Our one-to-one sessions at Dreadnought are designed with the young person at their heart:
Personalised: Each session is carefully tailored to address the unique needs and aspirations of every individual.
Confidential: Conducted within a safe and supportive environment that fosters honest and open communication.
Empowering: Focused on building resilience, confidence, and emotional intelligence to support personal growth.
These sessions are available at our Centre in Redruth, and also across the whole of Cornwall. Please note there is a fee for these services. Further details can be found on our referral page.
Aspires Project
The Aspires Project is a supportive “Moving On” programme designed to empower young people with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). Our aim is to help young people transition into mainstream social activities with confidence and independence.
Aspires is open to young people aged 8 to 18 who have a confirmed medical diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). Participants should ideally be engaged in mainstream education or demonstrate mainstream cognitive abilities. If you are uncertain about whether your child meets the eligibility criteria, please do not hesitate to reach out to us, we’re here and happy to assist with any questions or concerns you may have!
Aspires groups are created to provide a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable space where young people can actively develop vital social skills, build confidence, and strengthen self-esteem, all while fostering greater independence. Throughout the term, weekly sessions offer structured group activities that encourage meaningful interaction, alongside opportunities for participants to pursue personal interests or simply relax.
A consistently high staff-to-participant ratio ensures individual attention and personalised support, essential for motivating each young person to achieve their full potential.
The summer period brings added excitement, with a diverse range of activities designed to challenge young people, helping them step beyond their comfort zones and prepare for mainstream social experiences. For older groups, multi-activity residential trips provide valuable opportunities for bonding, growth, and creating lasting memories.
We Know How to Have Fun!
Playfulness is at the heart of how we operate.
Group Work
Participating in group activities fosters essential social skills, confidence, and self-esteem. Young people learn to share, take turns, negotiate, respect boundaries and rules, appreciate diverse opinions, and develop the confidence to express their own viewpoints. These skills extend beyond the group setting, positively influencing their experiences at home, school, and within the broader community, helping them become engaged and responsible members of society.
At The Dreadnought Centre, group sessions maintain a high adult-to-young-person ratio, no less than 1:2, ensuring each young person has access to individual support and meaningful one-to-one conversations when needed. Sessions are led by experienced staff members and supported by trained volunteers, offering young people the opportunity to engage with a diverse range of positive adult role models in a safe, respectful, and nurturing environment.
In School Groups
Dreadnought delivers issue-based peer support groups within the school setting, designed for young people facing similar challenges, such as difficulties with friendships or anger management. These groups encourage participants to collaborate and support one another in navigating their challenges.
As with all Dreadnought work, confidentiality is paramount; young people are not required to share personal details publicly and are asked to respect the privacy of their peers. The focus is on looking forward, fostering a supportive environment where no one is blamed for past situations.
Each group consists of between three and six young people and is facilitated by a staff member alongside a trained sessional worker. Sessions run for a minimum of six weeks and are tailored specifically to the unique needs and issues of the group participants, ensuring meaningful and relevant support.
Sibling groups
Dreadnought Sibs offers a peer-led support group specifically for siblings of children with additional needs and disabilities. Our programme creates a safe and welcoming environment where young people can relax, connect, and build friendships with peers who share similar experiences. The focus is on providing a positive space for fun and socialising, offering a valuable break from family life.
While the group is centred on enjoyment and community, there are opportunities for individual, confidential conversations with experienced team members when needed. Additionally, when common challenges arise among attendees, we dedicate part of the session to addressing these issues through engaging, supportive activities. This approach helps young people feel understood and reassured that they are not alone in their experiences.
